SCOPE(The Standing Committee On Professional Exchange)

International (IFMSA)

Brief History :

The Standing Committee On Professional Exchange (SCOPE)was the first Standing Committee to be created within the International Federation of Medical Students’ Associations (IFMSA), and forms its backbone. The student exchange scheme was set up in 1951 SCOPE, but the now-familiar common application form was not introduced until later, in1968. Starting from 1956, 11 countries participated in SCOPE exchanges; this number kept on growing as years passed and as IFMSA expanded, and in 2006, more than 676 Local Committee and 1003 Medical Faculty participated in the exchange program, sending over 7000 students to benefit from a clinical clerkship in 78 different countries.

Mission Statement :

"The aim of SCOPE is to promote international understanding and co-operation amongst medical students and all health professionals through international exchange of students." (IFMSA-Bylaws)

As by its existence, SCOPE had the mission of promoting cultural understanding and co-operation amongst medical students and all health professionals, through the facilitation of international student exchanges. The exchange program offers students a unique educational and cultural experience in addition to their regular medical curriculum. SCOPE plays a major role in helping the students to broaden their understanding of medical and social conditions in different countries.

SCOPE-Palestine

SCOPE-PS was first founded in 2005.This was after foundation of IFMSA generally in 2004 which became part of IFMSA in the General Assembly of the international federation in March 2005, and got the full membership in August 2006.This late establishment of SCOPE-PS and IFMSA-PS generally was because of Israeli occupation and the large obstacles that the Israeli put on the academic process .

This Committee hosts an incoming international medical student for each exchange. In return the clerkship, housing, board, and social program are provided for every Palestinian medical student participating in SCOPE. The exchanges are coordinated by the national exchanges officers (NEOs). They oversee the local exchange officers (LEOs) at each participating medical institution in Palestine and are responsible for signing the contracts with other member countries of IFMSA that allow the exchanges to take place.

About our exchange and work

The exchange was initially unilateral (send student from our country to outside ) since it was hard in that time to receive students from outside ,and because of many obstacles that Israeli put in front of us .but this thing didn’t ruin our spirit and we work so hard in front of all obstacles ,and at last we managed to receive our first group of incoming student from different countries in 2008.

SCOPE-Palestine always got used to meet the big SCOPE family in all meetings, March August and all regional meetings and assemblies, and our SCOPE members and the NEOs was always the best and utilized all these meeting in developing our SCOPE database and work.
